In order to ascend and descend the Potomac River, the British naval squadron was forced to use kedge anchors to ease their warships over the shallow and ever-changing Kettle Bottom Shoals. This time consuming and exhausting work, called "warping," continued uninterrupted for five successive days. Each ship reported going aground at least twenty times.
