A collaborative effort with Smithsonian Gardens, the United States Botanic Garden, and Smithsonian Exhibits, Orchids: A Moment invites viewers to pause and observe and diverse selection of these exotic, alluring plants. Artists have a long history of depicting still lifes, particularly flowers, and this presentation connections to that tradition. The display also highlights the uniqueness of each orchid, showing visitors a small sample of the infinite compositions that nature provides.
The Smithsonian Gardens Orchid Collection has grown from five plants to over 8,000 specimens since 1974. This is the first time that the annual Orchid Exhibit is being held at the Hirshhorn.
