The KKK in New York

When the KKK rose again in the 1920s, it recruited aggressively in the North. The Klan had rebranded itself as a national organization, and it reached deep into New York. This was clear by the time of the Democratic National Convention in Madison Square Garden in 1924. William Gibbs McAdoo, a leading contender for the nomination and the late President Wilson's son-in-law, had solid Klan support. Time reported extensively on the violence that frequently broke out on the floor of the Garden between Klan members and the supporters of New York Governor and candidate Al Smith. The Klan, closely aligned with Prohibitionists, loathed Smith, a Catholic and an opponent of Prohibition.
