Clare Booth Luce
Letter to Andrew Heiskell, August 11, 1973

Clare Booth Luce's "hasty, off the cuff" four-page, single-spaced letter to Andrew Heiskell was her enthusiastic response to seeing People for the first time. It is a tour de force of wit, instinct, and insight. Capturing the comments of hairdressers at the Waldorff Astoria as they glanced at the magazine over her shoulder, she concluded:

It was a great success with those two women. And my guess is that... It is bound to be the best read magazine in any hairdressing salon in America. And in any doctor's or dentist's waiting room. Furthermore ... it will probably be read cover to cover, because reading it is like eating peanuts -- you can't stop once you begin.
