Dummy issue of a sports magazine, April 19, 1954
Publishers commonly experiment with a series of prototypes, called "dummys," before releasing a final design or product. Henry Luce originally wanted to call his magazine Sport, but the copyright was owned by another publisher, who wanted an exorbitant fee for its reuse. As late as April 1954, Luce had still not landed on a pithy title he liked. |
