Camp cot, ca 1775-77
George Washington slept here, indeed. The folding cot's flimsy canvas offered little comfort to the Revolutionary War general when the Continental Army encamped at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, following a series of bitter defeats. Waiting out the brutally cold winter of 1777, Washington and his staff turned the long months into a formative period of training and resupply.
