Norman Rockwell
Tattoo Artist, 1944
Cover illustration for The Saturday Evening Post, March 4, 1944

After Rockwell completed his Four Freedoms, he returned to creating more lighthearted covers for the Post, but maintained a focus on the American soldier. Rockwell researched the subject for this painting at a tattoo parlor on New York's Bowery. Standing in front of a tattooist's flash -- a decorative design sheet from which clients select their tattoos -- is a sailor who has been commemorating a new love interest at every port. Illustrator Mead Schaeffer modeled as Rockwell's tattoo artist.
