Norman Rockwell
War News, 1944
Intended illustration of The Saturday Evening Post, March 4, 1944

Intended as a cover for the Saturday Evening Post but never completed, War News pictures a restaurant counterman and his customers listening to a radio news report. Though newspaper text is not evident in this work, the headline of the January 17, 1944 Times Record of Troy, New York, appeared in the artist's preliminary drawing. Calling attention to the proposed invasion of Normandy, it read, "Invasion Plans at France Possible." Rockwell decided not to submit War News to the Post, perhaps because it was hard to convey what the men were hearing. He instead went on to create a second painting, the more clearly articulated Man Charting War Maneuvers, which was published on April 29, 1944.
