"Be nice to him, he's about to be drafted," March 3, 1942
Editorial cartoon for NEA Service, INC, March 1942

During World War II, the draft was on everyone's mind. The Selective Training and Service Act of 1940 initiated the first peacetime draft in United States history, requiring all men between the ages of 21 and 45 to register for service. Illustrator William Galbraith Crawford had first-hand experience with the draft -- commissioned by the Army at the start of World War I, he later served in France in an air reconnaissance unit in the Army Air Corps.
