1940-1949

During World War II, Rockwell created what became archetypal images of the home front, and afterward he chronicled the nation's return to peace. Rockwell's enlisted man, Willie Gillis, was one of the most popular creations in the time period. From the draft call to college on the G.I. Bill, Willie reflected the experience of the sons, brothers, and husbands of many Post readers. In the last half of the decade, Rockwell focused on the social and technological changes that ushered in the postwar era.
