Nolands Ferry
Nolands Ferry provided a Potomac River crossing near the Monocacy River. Initially the site was a river ford for an Indian trail and later a wagon road leading south from Pennsylvania. Ferry use began here in the early 1740s.
In 1778, thousands of British and German prisoners from the Battle at Saratoga crossed at Nolands Ferry headed south to prison camps in Virginia. The weather that winter made for a challenging and sometimes dangerous passage through the river. Also a crossing point for troops during the Civil War, Nolands Ferry saw less use as crossings and bridges near Washington, DC became more popular.
