Rigorous training in chemical defense and proper use of gas masks was conducted in training camps in the U.S. and France. Soldiers were instructed to put on their respirators at the first hint of an odor that might be gas. Training included wearing the mask for long periods of time and performing routine tasks while wearing the mask. Drills were conducted to assure soldiers mastered the skills needed to use the gas mask instantly upon hearing a gas alarm and keep the mask on until all traces of gas would have dissipated.
