Oxygen Inhalator
Oxygen therapy was the only truly beneficial treatment for phosgene poisoning. Medical personnel administered oxygen to cyanotic (bluish skin due to oxygen deprivation) phosgene casualties from the ambulance to the nearest gas hospital. One Army pamphlet directed that this type of oxygen treatment should be continued "hour after hour with brief intervals, until the edema [excess fluid] of the lungs clears up."
