Mustard, the King of Battle Gases (2)

Mustard gas was the most insidious of the chemical substances employed during the war. Known as a vesicant or blistering agent, it produced painful burns on exposed skin, particularly tender parts of the skin such as the neck, under the arms, and the scrotum. It destroyed tissue as long as it remained on the epidermis, doing damage several hours before other symptoms appeared. Bronchopneumonia was a frequent cause of death in gassed patients.
