Israel Spotts, Co. G, 200th Pennsylvania Volunteers, was injured at the siege of Petersburg (the longest military action of the Civil War) with a penetrating gunshot wound to the back. This photograph illustrates a procedure whereby six pints of blood-tinged pus were removed to relieve an abscess in his chest cavity. |
