1865:
The year 1865 saw the final acts of the American Civil War, as Union armies converged on the last strongholds of the Confederacy in Virginia and the Carolinas. Major battles were fought on many fronts, but the inevitable end came in April 1865 with surrender of the two main Confederate armies still in the field and the collapse of the Confederate government.
But the medical response to the war was far from over. Thousands of wounded soldiers still required extensive care and rehabilitation. Meanwhile, the Army Surgeon General's office began the monumental task of collating hundreds of thousands of medical records and artifacts -- a task that would finally be realized with publication, almost 25 years later, of the Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion.
