Interior View of Patient Accommodations on the US Army Hospital Steamer, the D.A. January, c September 1862:
The D.A. January was contracted as a transport by the Western Sanitary Commission in 1861. It was sold to the Army on April 1, 1862, and immediately put to service transporting wounded from the Battle of Shiloh on April 6 and 7. In September 1862, it was refitted as a hospital ship. This drawing was made either as a plan, or as a record of that renovation.
