1864:
In January, Bazille rented his first studio on the rue de Vaugirard, Paris. In June, he traveled to Normandy with Monet. On his return, he failed his exams, persuaded his parents to let him drop medicine in favor of art, and painted Reclining Nude. Brazille spent the rest of the summer as usual in Montpellier and at Meric, the family's summer residence, where he painted The Pink Dress. He returned to Paris in the fall, but not to Gleyre's studio.
