Terrorism:
More than a decade after the 9/11 attacks, two acts of terrorism shook the world in 2013.
On April 15, a pair of homemade bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring more than 200. Boston Globe photographer John Tlumacki was shooting his 20th marathon when the explosion threw his cameras into the air. His photos of the attack ran in newspapers and magazines around the world.
In Nairobi, Kenya, five months later, New York Times photographer Tyler Hicks was at a frame shop when Islamist militants stormed a nearby shopping mall, killing 67 people in a four-day siege. Racing into the mall alongside police, Hicks said, "It seemed everywhere you turned, there was another body."
