Born "Buck Deer," Elias Boudinot in 1828 became editor of the Georgia-based Cherokee Phoenix, the first newspaper for an American Indian tribe. Boudinot favored US plans to move his tribe west, but tribal leaders wouldn't allow the issue to be debated in print. Boudinot quit. |
