Floyd Gibbons, covering World War I in France, yearned to be where "the real action is." In the battle for Belleau Wood he was wounded and lost an eye while attempting to help a wounded Marine. When he moved to radio, his rapid-fire delivery rivaled his patch as a trademark. At right, Gibbons's topcoat, hat and walking stick.
