Earthquake Repair

In August 2011, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake shook the East Coast, causing millions of dollars in damage to the Cathedral and other national landmarks. As part of the stabilization process, stones from the damaged south west grand pinnacle of the south transept were removed. The south transept and the central tower were the areas most damaged in the earthquake. Work -- and fundraising -- is ongoing to inspect, stabilize, repair and replace damaged stone, and restore the Cathedral.
Two sets of eight carvings on the two grand pinnacles of the south transept represent 16 Old Testament prophets. No records exist as to the specific identifies of the individual carvings.
