Eleanor Roosevelt
As Chairperson of the United Nations' Commission on Human Rights, Eleanor Roosevelt helped shape the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations on December 10, 1948.
As First Lady, she emerged as a powerful voice for social causes, especially those affecting children and youth, women , and African-Americans. Her writings, including a daily newspaper column, "My Day," gave voice to those who had not been heard.
Mrs. Roosevelt's sculpture is included in the Human Rights Porch, alongside Archbishop Oscar Romero, Rosa Parks, Mother Teresa and others. It was dedicated on Dec. 5, 1998 on the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
