Created by cartoonist Hank Ketcham while serving in the Navy during World War II, the "salty, pint-sized sailor" know as Half-Hitch appeared in the Saturday Evening Post from 1943-45. After Ketcham became world famous with his Dennis the Menace strip, the Navy-themed comic was revived and carried nationally from 1970-75. Hitch and his talking pet seagull, Poopsy, were joined by a cast of characters including a stern captain, "Chaplain Charlie", and the swearing, coffee drinking Chief trying to fit in to the "new Navy" of the Zumwalt-era. |
