In 2010, Lance Corporal Kyle Carpenter was stationed in the Marjah district of Afghanistan, disrupting enemy activity and providing security for locals. Carpenter and a fellow Marine were posted in a rooftop security position when the enemy attacked with hand grenades. One grenade landed inside Carpenter's sandbagged position. Without hesitation, Carpenter used his body to shield his fellow Marine from the deadly blast. Carpenter was severely wounded when the grenade detonated but saved the life of his fellow Marine. |
