Navy Hospital Corpsman Edward Benfold's company of Marines came under heavy fire in Korea in 1952. Braving enemy fire, Benfold ran from position to position treating wounded Marines. Eventually he made his way to an exposed ridge where he spotted two Marines lying in a crater. As he made his way to tend to them, an enemy soldier hurled two grenades at the three men while two others charged towards the crater. Benfold grabbed a grenade in each hand and ran toward his attackers. Pushing the grenades into the enemy, he killed them instantly and saved his two comrades but was mortally wounded in the attack.
