Along with Major General Smedley Butler, Sergeant Major Dan Daly is one of only two Marines awarded two Medals of Honor in two separate actions. While fighting in China during the Boxer Rebellion in 1900, Daly single-handedly defended his position against numerous attacks and inflicted approximately 200 casualties on his attackers. In 1915, he and 37 other Marines stationed in Haiti were attacked by 400 insurgents. Daly helped scatter the enemy and received a second Medal of Honor for his gallantry. During the Battle of Belleau Wood in 1917, Daly received the Navy Cross and is credited with uttering the famous phrase, "Come on, you sons of bitches, do you want to live forever?"
