Corporal Dakota Meyer was on security detail when his team members entered a rural Afghani village to meet with local elders in 2009. Meyer head via radio his team being ambushed by more than 50 insurgents with RPGs, mortars, and machine guns. Meyer and a driver took off in a gun-truck in an attempt to divert enemy fire and allow the Marines to escape. Using the truck's machine gun and his rifle, Meyer neutralized a large number of the enemy as he and the driver made a total of five trips into the ambush zone to evacuate wounded Marines and Afghani soldiers. Despite being wounded himself, Meyer continued to drive into enemy fire to recover casualties, even entering the village on foot to bring out the bodies of four Marines.
