Devil Dogs
In June 1917, a force of Marines attached to the US 2nd Division became some of the first American troops sent to fight World War I. Stationed south of Verdun, the Marines fought fiercely and doggedly, earning the nickname "Tuefelhunden" or "Devil Dogs" from their German enemies. During the month-long battle of Belleau Wood in June 1918, Marines proved themselves a lethal force on the battlefield, stopping cold a drive on Paris in the bloodiest battle in Marine Corps history to date. Marines continued to protect American interests at home and abroad, working with the Navy to develop the amphibious tactics that would make them famous in the coming decades.
