Naval aviator and Marine Lieutenant Colonel John H Glenn, Jr., USMC walks to his Mercury spacecraft, "Friendship 7" at Cape Canaveral, Florida on 20 February 1962. With this mission, he became the first American to orbit the earth. He later became the oldest person to go into space, when at age 77 he flew on the Space Shuttle Discovery during STS_95 in 1998. Glenn earned the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, a Congressional Gold Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. |
