1884 Statue of Liberty: Deed of Sale:
Holding high the flame of hope in New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty has welcomed generations of immigrants and became an icon for freedom. Designed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, "Liberty Enlightening the World" was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States. This deed of gift marked the statue's presentation on July 4, 1884, in Paris. At the statue's base, Emma Lazarus's poem, "The New Colossus" speaks of the "huddled masses yearning to breathe free."
