Immigrant Textile Workers:
By the 1830s several textile mills were operating in Lowell, Massachusetts. By the 1850s they employed an increasing number of immigrants -- especially from Ireland. The newcomers fought discrimination, long hours, and demands to work faster. This 1860 Census volume documents female "mill hands" living in two Lowell boarding houses.
