Injustice & Resistance:
The struggle to secure the civil rights of African Americans began in the 18th century with Revolutionary War soldiers fighting for their freedom. It continued in the 19th century with antislavery petitions, and in the 20th century with the formation of civil rights organizations.
During the 1950s and 1960s, the struggle gained momentum as marches, sit-ins, boycotts, and court challenges to segregation gradually dissolved the legal underpinnings of racial discrimination. Today, challenges persist and Americans continue to struggle to form a "more perfect union."
