When Elijah King lost an arm after a gunpowder explosion, his owner -- Caldwell Carr of Fauquier County, Virginia -- freed him. King bought produce in Virginia and sold it in the District of Columbia. As this 1857 list shows, he ultimately acquired substantial property on 17th street. |
