Paths to Freedom:
The 13th Amendment ultimately brought an end to slavery in the United States. Prior to its ratification in 1865, however, enslaved people found other routes to freedom.
Some escaped. Some staged armed revolts. Others purchased their freedom with money that they had earned and been allowed to keep. Still others were freed through the will of a deceased owner. In April 1862, an act of Congress freed those enslaved in the District of Columbia.
