During the Battle of Tassafaronga, the heavy cruiser Minneapolis was hit by two torpedoes: one removed the cruiser's bow, the other flooded the number two fire room. This message announced that the cruiser was in danger of sinking, but magnificent damage control and seamanship enabled the cruiser to reach Tulagi where, camouflaged with palm fronds, the ship's company and Seabees made temporary repairs so that Minneapolis could reach the United States. |
