USS Hammerhead:
Hammerhead began its second war patrol in September 1944. On 1 October, the sub encountered a five-ship convoy with three escorts. Hammerhead launched ten torpedoes, making six hits and sinking three of the vessels. Twenty days later, the sub found a six-ship convoy, and sank two more merchant ships. The patrol earned the Hammerhead the Navy Unit Commendation. |
