Torpedo Part:
The object displayed here was part of one of Silversides' torpedoes fired at Toei Maru the previous day. The explosion of the torpedo blew this fragment about three-quarters of a mile.

USS Silversides:
On 18 January 1943, Silversides was patrolling off Truk when she sank the tanker Toei Maru. The tanker's escort retaliated with depth charges. Silversides remained submerged, but was attacked by a Japanese aircraft that spotted oil trailing from the sub. When it was safe, Silversides surfaced to make repairs and recharge batteries.
