Although portrayed a dozen years after the end of the Napoleonic Wars, this foreboding image of a convict ship in Portsmouth Harbor in 1828 conveys the sense of dread that must have greeted the mostly-French prisoners-of-war captured by the British and sent to the "pontons," or prison hulks, during the Wars of the French Revolution and Empire (1793-1802/1803-1815).
