Other artists have used the iconic image to investigate foundational myths of the American States, drawing attention to ways that the promises of liberty and equality have fallen short for some.
In this work, titled Shimomura Crossing the Delaware, artist Roger Shimomura reimagines himself in the role of Washington. Despite being U.S. citizens, Shumomura and his family were held in an internment camp during World War II, along with more than a hundred thousand other Japanese Americans.
