Thomas Jefferson Medal

The Thomas Jefferson medals were made in a new style, which resembled those used by Europeans and became the model for later medals. On the front is a portrait of President Jefferson, along with his name and the date he entered office. The reverse shows clasped hands and the motto "Peace and Friendship."
The Jefferson medals were made in three sizes, and were not solid silver, but hollow. The front and back were struck separately on thin disks of silver, and then joined by a silver band. Lewis and Clark brought 32 Jefferson medals and 55 Washington season medals were presented to American Indian chiefs along their route.
