In 1787, a weak and ineffective confederation barely held the states together as a nation. To keep the Union from falling apart, America summoned Washington once again. Reluctant to come out of retirement and assume a leadership role, the 55-year-old ultimately felt duty bound to safeguard the nation he had worked so hard to create. On May 9, he departed for Philadelphia to preside over the Constitutional Convention. |
