Before the New Room was added, Washington considered this "the best place in my House," and important family portraits hung here. The Washington family coat-of-arms is carved and painted in the pediment above the mantel; the Washington crest is cast in the iron fireback. The paneled interior probably dates to just before Washington's marriage in 1759.
