"A Complete Country Blacksmith"
The Mount Vernon smiths, both free and enslaved, made and repaired a variety of utensils and agricultural implements, shoed horses, and even once assisted George Washington in designing a more efficient plow.
In addition to supporting the plantation, the smiths performed work for the neighboring property owners. Most of these customers lived within a five-mile radius of the shop. A fully operational blacksmith's shop was reconstructed on the site of the original in 2009. Today the smith forges hinges, hooks, nails, and many other items similar to those that were made 200 years ago.
