The House for Families:
The house for families was the building where most of the slaves working at the Mansion House Farm lived until it was replaced by the greenhouse quarters in 1792.
The slaves living in those spaces were either house servants or skilled craftsmen. Archaeologists excavated a wealth of domestic objects that had been deposited within a small, brick-lined cellar located underneath the structure. The cellar ceased to be used for storage and became a handy receptacle for unwanted trash. The archaeological assemblage provides a rare glimpse of the daily lives of the slaves.
