Flag and Pistol
J. Hoke described the following event in his "Historical Reminiscences of THE WAR: In and About Chambersburg" in 1884.
According to Hoke, on the morning of the fire, Mr. Jacob L. Brand took the flag (displayed here) that hung in front of Col. Rutherford's headquarters in the Mansion House from its staff and carried it to his home on Queen Street. His sister, Louisa Brand, about 21 years old, took the flag, wrapped it around herself, and with revolver in hand, stood in the front door daring any Confederate to fire the house or disturb the flag. The soldiers passed by the home sparing it from fire.
