Mark Bradford
James Brown is Dead, 2007

"I decided," Bradford reflected, "that I was going to take all my experiences in the world and all that material from the world -- the detritus of the world that we live in, the billboards, the stickiness, the messiness … and I was going to push myself into the center of the room." This work, like many of Bradford's paintings, is made from a range of materials, including posters and advertisements scavenged from the streets. Sometimes images and text emerge in the collaged works, such as the phrase "James Brown is Dead" here, drawn from a headline Bradford saw on a tabloid newspaper following the death of the iconic musician in 2006.
