The mailbox remnants weathered two of the worst disasters in the history of the United States -- the 1906 San Francisco earthquake that destroyed much of the city and killed more than 3,000 people; and the 1889 flood that wiped out the town of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, killing more than 2,000 people. |
