Farewell to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library

The DCPL Special Collections Department bids farewell to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library with a closing exhibition that displays selected items from he DC Public Library Archives collection. Take a look back at its creation, which includes photographs of he construction process, original blueprints, the scissors and ribbon used in the ceremony during the grand opening of the Library on August 21, 1972, and other ephemeral items.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library will soon undergo a complete modernization, closing in Spring 2017, with construction starting in the summer. The modernized library will re-open in 2020. The new library will be a sate-of-the-art facility slated to become the center of activity in the downtown area.
