Two Spherical Clocks
late 17th century

Georg Seydell

In spherical clocks like these, the body of the timepiece itself serves as the weight that drives it. To wind it, the ball is lifted upward. The striking mount balancing these two clocks refers to the hand of God, emerging from an exuberant gilded frame as if from the heavens to keep time in check. Although the clocks appear similar, each is the work of a different master. The larger was made by George Seydell, court clockmaker to the electors of Brandenburg from 1674 to 1688. The hour hand of the smaller one displays the Hesse coat of arms.
